Help Shape Calgary's Future: City Building Program
Official title: City Building
Calgary is creating a new master plan for how the city grows, builds, and moves over the coming decades. The City Building Program includes three major initiatives: the Calgary Plan (the city's highest-level planning document), a new Zoning Bylaw, and a Street Manual. Five phases of engagement have already happened, and more are coming in 2026.
Why This Matters
Live in Calgary? This will affect where homes get built, how tall buildings can be, and how you get around. Whether you're a renter hoping for more affordable options, a homeowner worried about neighbourhood changes, or a commuter stuck in traffic, these decisions shape your daily life for decades to come.
What Could Change
The Calgary Plan will set the framework for where and how the city grows. The new Zoning Bylaw will determine what can be built where—affecting housing density, building heights, and mixed-use development. The Street Manual will guide how roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes are designed. These documents go to Council for public hearing in 2026.
Key Issues
- What should Calgary's vision for growth and development look like over the coming decades?
- How should the new Zoning Bylaw regulate land use and building in Calgary?
- How should streets be designed to help people move around the city?
