Help Shape Brampton's New Zoning Rules

Official title: Comprehensive Zoning By-law Review

Open Community Planning Housing & Communities
Brampton is rewriting its zoning by-law from scratch. Zoning rules control what you can build on your property—how tall, how close to the street, what uses are allowed. The city wants input before finalizing rules that will shape development until 2051.

Why This Matters

Own property in Brampton? These rules decide what you can do with it. Want to add a basement apartment, build a garage, or start a home business? The new zoning by-law will set the limits. Even if you rent, zoning affects what gets built in your neighbourhood—more housing, more shops, or more of the same.

What Could Change

The new by-law could allow more housing types in residential areas—duplexes, townhouses, or apartments where only single homes were permitted before. Parking requirements might change, affecting construction costs. The rules will align with Brampton's 2051 Plan, potentially opening up areas for mixed-use development.

Key Issues

  • What building types should be allowed in different neighbourhoods?
  • How should parking requirements change for new developments?
  • Where should mixed-use development (shops and housing together) be permitted?
