Help Shape Brampton's New Urban Design Guidelines

Official title: Urban Design Guidelines

Closed Community Planning Housing & Communities
Brampton is rewriting the rules for how new buildings and neighbourhoods should look and function. The new Urban Design Guidelines will replace 20-year-old standards and cover everything from street layouts to garden suites. The city wants feedback on the third draft before it goes to Council for approval.

Why This Matters

Live in Brampton or thinking of moving there? These guidelines will shape what your neighbourhood looks like for decades. They affect everything from how tall buildings can be to whether you can add a garden suite in your backyard. Developers, homeowners planning renovations, and anyone who cares about walkable streets should pay attention.

What Could Change

New rules will govern street patterns, building heights, and community focal points across Brampton. Garden suites and additional residential units will have clear guidelines for the first time. The 2003 Development Design Guidelines will be replaced entirely. These standards will work alongside the new Zoning By-law to shape all future development.

Key Issues

  • What should street and block patterns look like in new developments?
  • How should guidelines address low-, mid-, and high-rise building forms?
  • What rules should govern garden suites and additional residential units?
  • How can the guidelines promote design excellence in public and private development?
