Help Shape Alberta's Wildfire Mitigation Strategy

Official title: Alberta Wildfire Mitigation Strategy engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Alberta is developing a province-wide strategy to reduce wildfire impacts. Wildfires have been getting worse over the past 20 years, forcing evacuations, destroying property, and filling the air with smoke. The government gathered feedback from stakeholders and Indigenous communities to shape this strategy.

Why This Matters

Live in Alberta? You've probably dealt with smoky skies, evacuation alerts, or worried about fire reaching your community. This strategy aims to make the whole province more resilient to wildfires. It could affect everything from how communities prepare for fire season to how quickly help arrives when fires threaten.

What Could Change

A new provincial wildfire mitigation strategy is expected by fall 2025. It will align with the national Canadian Wildland Fire Prevention and Mitigation Strategy. This could mean new prevention programs, updated building codes in fire-prone areas, or changes to how communities and government coordinate during fire season.

Key Issues

  • How can Alberta improve resilience to increasingly severe wildfires?
  • How should the province coordinate wildfire prevention across communities?
  • How can Alberta align with the national wildfire strategy?

What Happened

Stakeholder feedback was collected through an online survey from June 8 to July 3, 2024, and through in-person and online meetings from June to August 2024, with follow-up sessions in February 2025. This input is guiding the development of the Alberta Wildfire Mitigation Strategy, which is expected to be approved by fall 2025.
