Help Make School Routes Safer for Walking and Biking in Kelowna

Official title: School travel planning program

Open Community Planning Education Health & Safety Transportation
Kelowna wants to know how your kids get to school and what would make walking or biking easier. The city surveys families at participating schools to identify barriers—think busy intersections, missing sidewalks, or unsafe crossings. Your answers help shape infrastructure improvements for safer school routes.

Why This Matters

Drop your kids off at school every morning? You're not alone—school traffic is a headache for everyone. This program could mean safer crossings, better sidewalks, and less chaos at drop-off. If your child walks or bikes, their route could get safer. If they don't, this might make it possible.

What Could Change

Survey results feed directly into school travel plans. That could mean new crosswalks, traffic calming measures, or improved sidewalks near participating schools. South Rutland Elementary is currently being assessed, with Bellevue Creek Elementary getting follow-up improvements.

Key Issues

  • What barriers prevent students from walking or biking to school?
  • What infrastructure improvements would make school routes safer?
  • How do families currently travel to and from school?

How to Participate

  1. If your child attends South Rutland Elementary, complete the baseline survey about how your family travels to school.
  2. If your child attends Bellevue Creek Elementary, complete the follow-up survey to share how things have changed.
