Help Design Safer Streets in Halifax's North End
Official title: North End Complete Streets Phase 2
Halifax is redesigning 4.8 km of streets in the North End to make them safer for walking, biking, and transit. The project covers Maynard, Creighton, Northwood, Fuller, Charles, Nora Bernard, Cunard and North streets. Beyond just roads, they're looking at adding public plazas, seating, bike parking, and green spaces like rain gardens.
Why This Matters
Walk, bike, or take the bus in Halifax's North End? This project will reshape how you get around. Wider sidewalks and better crossings could make daily trips safer. New public spaces might give your neighbourhood more places to gather and connect.
What Could Change
Streets south of Bloomfield could get protected bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and improved crosswalks. New public amenities like seating and bike parking may be added. Rain gardens and street trees could be installed for stormwater management. Construction would happen in phases through 2028 and beyond.
Key Issues
- How should sidewalks and pedestrian crossings be improved for safety?
- What type of bike infrastructure should be built on these streets?
- What public spaces and amenities would benefit the community?
- How can the design respect the area's history and cultural identity?
