Help Shape Alberta's Long-Term Nature Strategy

Official title: Nature strategy engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Alberta asked residents how the province should protect and manage its natural landscapes as the population grows toward 7.1 million by 2050. The consultation gathered input on balancing economic growth with conservation of clean air, water, wildlife habitat, and other benefits nature provides.

Why This Matters

Alberta's nature provides the clean air you breathe, the water you drink, and the fertile soil that grows your food. As the province adds millions more people, decisions made now will shape whether future generations enjoy these same benefits. This affects everyone from farmers to city dwellers.

What Could Change

Alberta will develop a provincial nature strategy based on this feedback. The strategy could set new conservation targets, change how land use decisions are made, and create frameworks for balancing development with ecosystem protection. Indigenous communities and stakeholders will have their perspectives reflected in the final approach.

Key Issues

  • How should Alberta balance population and economic growth with nature conservation?
  • How can ecosystem services like clean water, fertile soil, and flood control be sustained for future generations?
  • How should Indigenous perspectives be incorporated into nature management?

What Happened

Albertans provided input through an online survey from September 12 to November 7, 2024. The government also engaged with Indigenous communities, organizations, and stakeholders. Feedback will inform the development of Alberta's nature strategy, which will reflect diverse interests and foster shared responsibility for maintaining nature.
