Help Shape Alberta's Plan for Parks

Official title: Plan for Parks engagement

Closed Community Planning Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Alberta is updating its 10-year strategic plan for provincial parks, recreation areas, and wildland parks. The government wants to balance growing visitor demand with conservation. Phase 2 engagement on the draft plan ran from May to July 2025, and results are now under review.

Why This Matters

Love camping or hiking in Alberta's parks? This plan will shape how you experience them for the next decade. It affects everything from campsite availability to trail access. If you've ever struggled to book a spot or worried about overcrowding, this is your chance to weigh in.

What Could Change

The new plan will set goals and actions for managing all sites under the Provincial Parks Act. It won't change what activities are allowed in different park types, and Treaty Rights and Métis harvesting will remain protected. But it will guide decisions on recreation opportunities, camping, and how parks handle increasing visitor pressure.

Key Issues

  • How should Alberta balance growing recreation demand with environmental sustainability?
  • What priorities should guide the management of provincial parks for the next decade?
  • How can parks address competing needs from different user groups?

How to Participate

  1. Review the New draft Plan for Parks and the Plan for Parks fact sheet to understand the proposed direction.
  2. Read the Phase 1 What We Heard Report to see what other Albertans said.
  3. Call the Alberta Parks Contact Centre at 1-877-537-2757 or visit any Alberta Parks Visitor Centre for more information.

What Happened

Phase 2 engagement collected feedback through an online survey from May 27 to July 26, 2025. The government also engaged with Indigenous communities and stakeholders including recreation organizations, conservation organizations, and park partners. Results are currently under review. Phase 1 engagement ran from June 19 to August 18, 2024, and a What We Heard Report has been published.
