Should Mississauga Change Its Fireworks Rules?

Official title: Reviewing the City's Fireworks By-law

Closed Regulations & Permits Housing & Communities Justice & Rights
Mississauga reviewed its fireworks by-law and asked residents what they think about the current rules. Right now, you can set off fireworks on your own property during five holidays: Lunar New Year, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali, and New Year's Eve. The city gathered feedback through a survey in early 2025 and presented recommendations to council in May.

Why This Matters

Love fireworks on Canada Day? Hate being woken up at midnight? This affects your neighbourhood directly. The rules determine when your neighbours can legally set off fireworks—and when they can't. Pet owners and people with PTSD often have strong feelings about this too.

What Could Change

The city could add or remove designated holidays when fireworks are allowed. Permit requirements might change. Fines for illegal use could increase. The rules about where you can set off fireworks might also be updated.

Key Issues

  • Which holidays should allow fireworks without a permit?
  • Are the current rules about where fireworks can be used appropriate?
  • Should the permit process for fireworks be changed?

What Happened

The city collected community feedback through a public survey in early 2025. Responses informed recommendations for potential changes to the Fireworks By-law. A report with recommendations was presented to the General Committee in May 2025.
