We Wai Kai Nation River Trail Loop - Quinsam Reserve

Official title: We Wai Kai Nation River Trail Loop

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Indigenous & Northern Transportation
The We Wai Kai Nation wants to build a 2 km gravel walking trail on the Quinsam No. 12 reserve near Campbell River, BC. The loop trail would connect the community to the Quinsam River and local services without needing to walk on roads with cars. About 10,000 square metres of vegetation would need to be cleared.

Why This Matters

Live in or near Campbell River? This trail could become a new walking spot for you. It's designed to be accessible for people with mobility challenges, kids, and seniors. The interpretive signs will share We Wai Kai traditional knowledge and local history.

What Could Change

If approved, about one hectare of vegetation on the Quinsam reserve would be cleared for the trail. The project would add benches, rest areas, and interpretive signage about local wildlife and We Wai Kai traditions. Tourists and Campbell River residents would gain access to the trail at Quinsam Crossing.

Key Issues

  • Should 10,000 m² of vegetation be cleared on federal reserve land for the trail?
  • What environmental impacts might the trail have on the Quinsam River area?
