Ferruginous Hawk Nest Relocation at CFB Suffield
Official title: DRDC Suffield, Ferruginous Hawk nest relocation from utility poles onto an artificial nesting platform in the Experimental Proving Grounds - Canadian Forces Base Suffield
The military needs to re-energize power lines at CFB Suffield in Alberta. Problem: endangered Ferruginous Hawks have built nests on those poles. The plan is to gradually move the nests—about 100 metres per year—onto a new artificial platform 450 metres away, giving the hawks time to accept their new home.
Why This Matters
Ferruginous Hawks are a threatened species in Canada. This project shows how military operations and wildlife protection can coexist. If you care about endangered species or live near CFB Suffield, this affects your backyard.
What Could Change
If approved, DND will install a permanent artificial nesting platform and use a mobile platform to gradually relocate the hawk nests over several years. The utility line will be re-energized for a new defence facility.
Key Issues
- Will the gradual relocation approach ensure the hawks accept the new nesting platform?
- Are the setback distances from infrastructure adequate to protect the hawks?
