Help Shape Edmonton's Plan to Reduce Business Waste
Official title: Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) Waste Roadmap
Edmonton businesses generate 70% of the city's waste, and most of it ends up in landfill. The city wants to change that. They're developing a four-year roadmap focused on two areas: food waste from restaurants and grocery stores, and construction debris from building sites. If you work in these industries, they want your input on proposed actions.
Why This Matters
Own a restaurant? Manage a construction site? This could change how you handle waste. Right now, businesses choose whether to recycle or divert waste. New rules could make some practices mandatory. Even if you don't run a business, less waste means a smaller landfill footprint for Edmonton.
What Could Change
The city may introduce new requirements for how businesses handle food scraps and construction debris. Property managers could face new rules about waste services for tenants. Haulers and processors might see changes to collection and recycling standards. The final roadmap goes to City Council in spring 2026.
