East Calgary International Avenue Communities Local Area Plan

Official title: Greater Forest Lawn Communities Local Area Planning

Closed Community Planning Housing & Communities Transportation
Calgary has approved a 30-year plan for 11 east-side communities including Forest Lawn, Dover, and Erin Woods. The plan guides where new housing, businesses, and community improvements can go. It passed Council unanimously in December 2024 after two years of public input.

Why This Matters

Live in east Calgary? This plan shapes what gets built in your neighbourhood for the next 30 years. It affects housing options, transit improvements, and park upgrades. Whether you're a homeowner, renter, or business owner in these communities, the decisions are now locked in.

What Could Change

The plan allows more housing types on residential lots, including rowhouses and townhouses. Development will be concentrated near transit stations and major roads like 36 Street SE. New rules guide building heights and designs. The old International Avenue ARP will be replaced once this plan takes effect.

Key Issues

  • Where should higher-density housing be allowed in these communities?
  • How can parks, open spaces, and recreation facilities be improved?
  • What transportation and mobility improvements are needed?
  • How can community safety be enhanced through design and investment?
