Dock Replacement at Babine River Salmon Counting Station
Official title: Babine River Field Camp: Dock Replacement Project
Fisheries and Oceans Canada plans to replace two aging docks at a salmon counting station on the Babine River in northern BC. The site is run in partnership with Lake Babine Nation to monitor spawning salmon from July to October. The new single dock will be smaller than the two it replaces.
Why This Matters
This is a routine infrastructure project at a remote research site. It mainly matters to Lake Babine Nation members and researchers who use the facility. The salmon counting work here helps manage fish stocks that support commercial and Indigenous fisheries.
What Could Change
Two old docks will be demolished and replaced with one new dock. The overall dock footprint will shrink from about 95 square metres to 38 square metres. Construction is planned for April to August 2025.
Key Issues
- Will the dock construction affect salmon habitat or water quality?
- How will treated wood from old piles be safely disposed of?
