Help Shape How Alberta Teaches Indigenous History and Perspectives

Official title: First Nations, Métis and Inuit partners – Curriculum engagement

Open Policy & Studies Education Indigenous & Northern
Alberta is developing new curriculum content about First Nations, Métis and Inuit histories for grades 7-10. The province wants input on social studies, math, physical education, and life skills courses. This includes content about treaties and residential schools.

Why This Matters

Have kids in Alberta schools? This shapes what they'll learn about Indigenous peoples, treaties, and residential schools. If you're First Nations, Métis, or Inuit, this is a chance to ensure your community's history and perspectives are accurately represented in classrooms.

What Could Change

New curriculum content for grades 7-10 will be drafted based on this feedback. Social studies, math, phys-ed, and CALM courses could all include more Indigenous content. Draft curriculum will be released for optional classroom piloting before final approval.

Key Issues

  • How should Indigenous histories and contributions be taught in social studies?
  • What content about treaties and residential schools should be included?
  • How can Indigenous perspectives be integrated into math, phys-ed, and life skills courses?

How to Participate

  1. Register for one of the in-person engagement sessions in Lethbridge, Calgary, Slave Lake, or Edmonton. Spaces are limited, so register early.
