Official title: Legislature grounds improvement engagement

Closed Community Planning Housing & Communities
Alberta asked residents to help choose a new design for the wading pool area at the Legislature grounds in Edmonton. Nearly 4,000 people voted on three concepts. The "River" design won with 66% of votes, chosen for its natural materials, green space, and flowing water features.

Why This Matters

Visit the Legislature grounds with your family? This affects what you'll find there. The new wading pool area will have more trees for shade, natural materials, and accessible water features. Construction wrapped up in 2024.

What Could Change

The terraced wading pool area has been redesigned with the "River" concept. The project also includes refurbishments to the reflecting pool, ornamental dome fountain, and improved walkways and decking.

Key Issues

  • Which design concept best balances aesthetics, accessibility, and enjoyment?
  • What elements and features are most important for the wading pool area?

What Happened

Nearly 4,000 Albertans participated through an online survey and on-site engagement from January 12-27, 2023. Concept C "River" won with 65.9% of votes, followed by "Aurora" at 17.1% and "Strata" at 17%. Voters chose the River concept for its tranquility, natural materials, green space, shade trees, and accessible water features. Construction was completed in 2024.
