Contamination Cleanup Order for Former Gas Station - 745 King Street West, Gananoque

Official title: Catharine Kench, Michael Kench, Roger Tregunna, Resaca Homes Ltd. - Order to prevent discharge of contaminants

Open Regulations & Permits Environment & Climate
Ontario's environment ministry wants to order the owners of a former gas station in Gananoque to clean up contamination. The site at 745 King Street West has benzene, toluene, and petroleum in the soil and groundwater. The pollution has spread beyond the property, but nobody knows how far yet.

Why This Matters

Live near this site? Your well water could be affected. The contamination has already spread off the property, and the full extent is unknown. Neighbours deserve to know what's in their groundwater.

What Could Change

If the order proceeds, the property owners must hire a consultant to map the contamination and create a cleanup plan. They'll need to figure out how far the benzene and petroleum have spread into neighbouring properties. A remediation plan will follow.

Key Issues

  • Should the Director's Order be issued to require contamination cleanup?
  • What is the full extent of off-site contamination from the former gas station?
