Oil Heating Conversion for Marten Falls First Nation Buildings

Official title: Electrical Distribution System Upgrades - Marten Falls First Nation

Closed Environmental Assessment Indigenous & Northern Natural Resources
Marten Falls First Nation wants to switch 24 community buildings from electric to oil heating. Why? Their power grid can't handle the current load, and they need to connect new buildings like a detox centre and healing lodge. This temporary fix prevents brownouts while they upgrade the electrical system.

Why This Matters

This project addresses critical infrastructure needs in a remote First Nation community. Reliable heating and power are essential for health services, housing, and community wellbeing. The new detox centre and healing lodge depend on this upgrade going forward.

What Could Change

If approved, 24 oil furnaces and fuel tanks will be installed across community buildings. A 50,000-litre holding tank will store fuel. This frees up electrical capacity for new construction, including 10+ houses and health facilities.

Key Issues

  • Is the temporary switch to oil heating an appropriate interim solution?
  • What are the environmental impacts of installing oil heating infrastructure?
