New Family Services Building for Whitefish Lake First Nation
Official title: Whitefish Lake First Nation Atikameg CFS Family Preservation and Prevention Building
Whitefish Lake First Nation wants to build a Family Preservation and Prevention Building on Utikoomak Lake reserve. The project includes solar and geothermal heating, new water and sewer connections, and a parking lot. Construction would happen on previously developed land.
Why This Matters
This project would provide family support services directly on reserve. For Whitefish Lake First Nation members, it means easier access to child and family services without travelling off-reserve. The green energy features could also serve as a model for other First Nations infrastructure projects.
What Could Change
If approved, a new community building would be constructed on Utikoomak Lake IR No 155. New water and sewer infrastructure would be installed. The building would use solar panels and geo-exchange systems for heating and cooling.
Key Issues
- Should the new building be approved for construction on pre-developed reserve lands?
- Are the proposed water and sewer connections appropriate for the site?
