Sewage Treatment Permit for Darlington Nuclear Tunnel Boring Project

Official title: Aecon Construction Group Inc and Kiewit Nuclear Canada Corp. carrying on business under the general partnership firm name Aecon - Environmental Compliance Approval (sewage)

Open Regulations & Permits Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Aecon and Kiewit want a permit to treat and discharge water from tunnel boring at the Darlington nuclear site. They're building cooling water tunnels for Ontario Power Generation's new nuclear project. The water treatment plant would run 24/7 on weekdays for about a year.

Why This Matters

Live near Bowmanville or the Darlington nuclear station? This permit affects what gets discharged into local stormwater systems. The treatment plant would handle up to 40 cubic meters of water per hour from tunnel construction.

What Could Change

If approved, the ministry will set effluent limits and monitoring requirements for discharges. The treated water would either go into the existing stormwater system or be recycled back to the tunnel boring machine.

Key Issues

  • Should the sewage treatment facility be approved for construction water discharge?
  • What effluent limits and monitoring should be required?
