Help Shape the Future of Windmill Road in Dartmouth
Official title: Windmill Road Functional Plan
Halifax is redesigning Windmill Road, a 5.5km corridor connecting Downtown Dartmouth to Burnside Industrial Park. With 30,000+ new housing units planned along the route, the city wants to make the street safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users. The new Burnside Expressway will pull traffic off Windmill Road, creating a chance to reimagine it as more than just a commuter route.
Why This Matters
Live in Dartmouth or commute through it? This road connects downtown to Burnside and beyond. Right now, sidewalks are disconnected and some bus stops aren't accessible. With 55,000 new residents expected, how this corridor is redesigned will shape daily commutes, housing options, and neighbourhood feel for decades.
What Could Change
Windmill Road could get continuous sidewalks, protected bike lanes, and better bus stops. A new transit terminal at Wrights Cove would serve as a hub for Burnside routes. With the Burnside Expressway pulling through-traffic away, the road could shift from a commuter corridor to a neighbourhood street with space for people.
Key Issues
- How should the road balance space for pedestrians, cyclists, transit, and cars?
- What infrastructure is needed to support 30,000+ new housing units?
- How can disconnected sidewalks and inaccessible bus stops be fixed?
- What should Windmill Road become once the Burnside Expressway opens?
