Help Shape Alberta's Wildfire Mitigation Strategy

Official title: Alberta Wildfire Mitigation Strategy engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Environment & Climate Natural Resources
Alberta is developing a province-wide strategy to reduce wildfire impacts on communities. The government gathered feedback from stakeholders and Indigenous communities through surveys and meetings in 2024. This input will shape how Alberta prepares for and responds to increasingly severe wildfire seasons.

Why This Matters

Live in Alberta? Wildfires have forced thousands to evacuate over the past 20 years. Smoke chokes cities hundreds of kilometres away. This strategy could mean better protection for your home, clearer evacuation plans, and fewer days breathing hazardous air.

What Could Change

Alberta plans to approve a new Wildfire Mitigation Strategy by fall 2025. This could bring new rules for firebreaks around communities, updated building codes in fire-prone areas, and coordinated response plans across the province. The strategy will align with a pan-Canadian approach led by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers.

Key Issues

  • How can Alberta improve community resilience to wildfires?
  • What collaborative actions are needed across the province?
  • How should Alberta align with the pan-Canadian wildfire strategy?

How to Participate

  1. The active engagement period has ended. Stakeholders provided feedback through surveys (June-July 2024) and meetings (June-August 2024, with follow-ups in February 2025). For questions about the strategy development, contact fp.engagement@gov.ab.ca.

What Happened

Stakeholder feedback was collected through an online survey from June 8 to July 3, 2024, and through in-person and online meetings from June to August 2024, with follow-up sessions in February 2025. This input is guiding the development of the Alberta Wildfire Mitigation Strategy, which is expected to be approved by fall 2025.
