Alternative Affordable Housing at Bechtel Street, Cambridge

Official title: Alternative Housing at Bechtel

Open Community Planning Housing & Communities
The Region of Waterloo wants to build affordable alternative housing on a property at 127-161 Bechtel Street in Cambridge. Options include tiny homes, container homes, or modular homes. Up to 6 units could be added to the site. The Region is asking residents for input on design features, green space, and how the development fits into the neighbourhood.

Why This Matters

On a waitlist for affordable housing in Waterloo Region? This project could mean new homes sooner. Live in the Bechtel neighbourhood? You'll have a say in what gets built next door—from building design to green space.

What Could Change

Up to 6 alternative housing units could be built at 127-161 Bechtel Street. These would be permanent, fully-serviced homes—not temporary shelters. The final design will depend on community feedback and the developer selected. New parking will be added, and 30% of the site must remain landscaped green space.

Key Issues

  • What type of alternative housing should be built (tiny homes, container homes, or modular homes)?
  • How should green space be incorporated into the design?
  • What green building features should be included?
  • How should the buildings be designed and placed to fit the neighbourhood?
