New School for Wahpeton Dakota Nation

Official title: Wahpeton Dakota Nation New School

Closed Environmental Assessment Education Indigenous & Northern
Wahpeton Dakota Nation wants to build a new two-storey school for 160 students from Pre-K to Grade 12. The project includes playgrounds, sports facilities, and new utility connections. The current portable classrooms will be moved and the old Communiplex demolished.

Why This Matters

This project would give Wahpeton Dakota Nation students a proper school building instead of portable classrooms. For the community, it means better educational facilities and local jobs during construction.

What Could Change

If approved, a 3,400 sq.m school will be built on the reserve. The old Communiplex will be demolished. New water, sewer, power, and gas lines will be installed.

Key Issues

  • Should the new school project proceed on the proposed site?
  • What are the environmental impacts of demolishing the Communiplex and building new infrastructure?
