Gas Line Installation for Kainai Twin Rinks Arena

Official title: Kainai Twin Rinks Gas Services

Closed Regulations & Permits Indigenous & Northern Natural Resources
ATCO is installing a new gas line to serve the Twin Rinks arena on Kainai Nation (Blood Tribe) land in southern Alberta. The project involves laying 330 metres of gas main and 80 metres of service line using trenching and directional drilling. This requires a permit under section 28(2) of the Indian Act.

Why This Matters

This is a routine infrastructure project on Kainai Nation reserve land. It's mainly relevant to community members who use the Twin Rinks facility. The work happens on already-disturbed land with minimal environmental impact expected.

What Could Change

If approved, ATCO can proceed with installing the gas service to the arena. The 6-metre-wide construction corridor will be remediated after work is complete, including reseeding and repaving.

Key Issues

  • Should the gas line installation permit be approved under section 28(2) of the Indian Act?
  • Are the proposed environmental mitigation measures adequate?
