Live Fire Training Facility at CFB Halifax
Official title: Instructional Natural Fire Environment for Readiness in Operations (INFERNO), East Coast Component, Canadian Forces Base Halifax
The Department of National Defence wants to build a new fire training facility at CFB Halifax. It would use shipping containers where military personnel practice fighting real fires using wood as fuel. Construction is planned for 2025-2026.
Why This Matters
Live near CFB Halifax? This facility will produce smoke from wood fires during training exercises. The environmental review looks at air quality and other local impacts.
What Could Change
If approved, DND will build seven shipping containers for fire training south of the existing helicopter fire trainer. Concrete foundations will be poured and regular wood-burning exercises will take place on the base.
Key Issues
- What are the air quality impacts from wood-burning fire training?
- Is the proposed location appropriate for this facility?
