Montreal's Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough is redeveloping Pierre-Tétreault Park and Bellerive Street along the St. Lawrence River. The park hasn't been updated since the 1970s. Plans include new pathways, bike lanes, public washrooms, seating areas, and a cooling zone. A green infrastructure system will also manage stormwater to reduce sewer overflow during heavy rains.

Why This Matters

Live in or visit Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve? This park along the St. Lawrence is getting its first major upgrade in 50 years. Cyclists and pedestrians will get better paths, new washrooms, and shaded seating. The stormwater system could also reduce flooding in the area during heavy rains.

What Could Change

Bellerive Street will be demineralized—the roadway and sidewalk removed and replaced with green space. The old decorative fountain near Notre-Dame Street East will be demolished. New stormwater infrastructure will channel rainwater directly to the St. Lawrence instead of the sewer system. Construction is planned for summer and fall 2025.

Key Issues

  • How should the park pathways and bike lanes be redesigned?
  • What urban furniture and amenities should be added for pedestrians and cyclists?
  • How should the green stormwater infrastructure be designed?
