High-Speed Internet Towers and Fibre for Island Lake First Nations
Official title: New (Multiple) Tower Construction, Upgrade (Multiple) Towers, and New Fibre Installation
The Island Lake Tribal Council wants to build 11 new telecommunications towers and lay 429 km of underground fibre optic cable. The goal? Bring high-speed internet to four remote First Nations communities in northern Manitoba: Garden Hill, St. Theresa Point, Red Sucker Lake, and Wasagamack. They'll also upgrade antennas on existing towers.
Why This Matters
Live in one of these Island Lake communities? This project could finally bring reliable high-speed internet to your home. Remote First Nations often have limited or no broadband access. Better connectivity means access to online education, telehealth, and economic opportunities.
What Could Change
If approved, 11 new 25-metre towers will go up across four communities. Underground fibre will connect them along 429 km of roadway. Existing towers will get upgraded antennas. Future modifications may add more equipment without additional review.
Key Issues
- Should 11 new telecommunications towers be built in these First Nations communities?
- Is the proposed 429 km underground fibre route appropriate?
- Should antenna upgrades on existing towers be approved?
