Underground Powerline Conversion at Pyramid Bench in Jasper National Park
Official title: ATCO Electric - Pyramid Bench Underground Conversion
ATCO Electric wants to bury 6 km of powerlines near Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park. Why? Their wildfire risk analysis found overhead lines pose a fire hazard when trees contact them. The project would serve Pyramid Lake Resort, Patricia Lake Bungalows, and Jasper Riding Stables.
Why This Matters
Visit Jasper or stay at Pyramid Lake Resort? This project aims to prevent power outages and reduce wildfire risk in the area. After the devastating 2024 Jasper wildfire, infrastructure resilience matters more than ever.
What Could Change
If approved, ATCO would trench and plow underground cables along 4.8 km of Pyramid Lake Road, then 1.2 km cross-country to Pyramid Lake Lodge. The old overhead lines would be removed and the land restored with native species.
Key Issues
- Should overhead powerlines be converted to underground in this section of Jasper National Park?
- What environmental impacts will trenching and construction have on the park?
- How will the old powerline alignment be rehabilitated?
