Should Halifax Airport Expand Its North Apron?
Official title: North Apron Expansion
Halifax International Airport wants to pave about 2,700 square metres of new apron space at the north end of the terminal. This would add more gates and give planes more room to maneuver. The airport authority is asking whether this expansion could cause significant environmental harm before deciding to proceed.
Why This Matters
Fly out of Halifax? This expansion could mean shorter waits at gates and smoother boarding. Live near the airport on Goudey Drive? Construction starts this fall and runs through next summer. The project also involves relocating a buried waste tank and adding stormwater drainage.
What Could Change
If approved, the airport will pave new apron space and install jet blast deflectors, new lighting, and a retaining wall. A modular building at 295 Goudey Drive will be removed. Construction would run October-December 2025, then April-June 2026.
Key Issues
- Will the expansion cause significant adverse environmental effects?
- Are there concerns about stormwater drainage and buried utilities?
