Peterborough Canal and Lift Lock Rehabilitation Project
Official title: Peterborough Canal Earth Dam Rehabilitation Phase II and Peterborough Lift Lock Upper Reach Sealing, TSW, Peterborough, Ontario
Parks Canada is rehabilitating a section of the Trent-Severn Waterway in Peterborough. The work includes fixing erosion damage along the canal banks from Lock 20 to McFarlane Street Bridge, stabilizing embankments, and sealing leaks at the historic Peterborough Lift Lock. Mature trees will be replaced with low-maintenance plants to maintain the park-like setting.
Why This Matters
Use the Trent-Severn Waterway for boating? This project keeps the canal navigable. Live near the Peterborough Lift Lock? You'll see construction activity and landscape changes. The historic lift lock is a National Historic Site and local landmark.
What Could Change
The canal channel will be stabilized with new erosion control infrastructure. Sheet piling and waterproof membranes will reduce water leakage at the lift lock. The landscape along the east embankment will shift from mature trees to low-maintenance vegetation.
Key Issues
- How should erosion control infrastructure be rehabilitated along the canal?
- What are the environmental impacts of replacing mature vegetation?
- How will construction affect boat traffic and public access?
