How Should Saskatoon Protect Its Natural Areas?
Official title: Natural Area Management Plans
Why This Matters
Use these trails for walking, cycling, or just getting outside? This affects how they're maintained and improved. Live near these natural areas? The plans shape what happens next door. Care about local wildlife and green spaces? This sets the template for how Saskatoon protects nature going forward.
What Could Change
The pilot sites will get new trails, gathering areas, and drainage improvements based on the approved plans. If successful, this approach becomes the standard for managing all natural areas in Saskatoon. Future sites could see similar conservation and recreation balancing.
Key Issues
- How can the city balance conservation with public recreational use?
- What features, ecosystems and species should be prioritized for protection?
- How can trails and gathering areas be improved while protecting natural habitats?
How to Participate
- Review the Engagement Report to see what feedback has already been gathered.
- Contact the Sustainability department by email or phone with your comments and questions.
What Happened
The city engaged with cultural, environmental, and recreational organizations, land developers, local communities, and adjacent landowners. Through meetings, information sessions, and workshops, participants provided feedback on protecting ecosystems, supporting community use, and balancing conservation with public access. The resulting Natural Area Management Plans and Conceptual Master Plans were approved in principle by City Council in May 2024.
