New Wastewater Lagoon System for Peepeekisis Cree Nation

Official title: Peepeekisis Cree Nation Community Lagoon Improvements

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Indigenous & Northern
Peepeekisis Cree Nation wants to build a new wastewater treatment system to serve their community. The current lagoon can't handle future growth—by 2043, the community is expected to reach 1,237 people. The project includes two new treatment cells, a 7.6 km pipeline, upgraded pumps, and a new access road.

Why This Matters

This is about basic infrastructure for an Indigenous community. Clean water and proper sewage treatment are fundamental services many Canadians take for granted. The project ensures Peepeekisis Cree Nation can grow safely over the next 20 years.

What Could Change

If approved, the old lagoon, pipeline, and pump station will be decommissioned. A new treatment facility at Site 5 will handle the community's wastewater. Construction includes a 2.4 km access road and upgraded pump station with backup generator.

Key Issues

  • Environmental impacts of constructing new wastewater treatment cells
  • Decommissioning the existing lagoon and infrastructure
