New Walking and Cycling Paths on Matsqui First Nation Reserve
Official title: Mómeqwem Multi-Use Pathway and McLennan Creek Active Transportation Crossing, Province of British Columbia
Infrastructure Canada is reviewing a project to build new walking and cycling paths on Matsqui First Nation reserve lands in British Columbia. The project includes widening an existing pathway along Harris Road, building a new bridge over McLennan Creek, and adding sidewalks and lighting. About 2,000 square metres of vegetation will be cleared.
Why This Matters
Live near Matsqui First Nation or use the Trans Canada Trail in this area? This project would make it safer and easier to walk or bike. The new bridge over McLennan Creek connects the trail network. Construction will clear some vegetation and involve work in the creek.
What Could Change
If approved, the existing 1.5-metre pathway along Harris Road would be widened to 3 metres for both walkers and cyclists. A new 25-metre bridge would cross McLennan Creek. New sidewalks, lighting, and benches would be installed throughout the area.
Key Issues
- Should the project proceed given the clearing of 2,000 square metres of vegetation?
- What are the environmental impacts of building a bridge over McLennan Creek?
- How will construction affect the Matsqui First Nation community?
