How Should Alberta Plan Its Infrastructure for the Next 20 Years?

Official title: Infrastructure planning engagement

Closed Policy & Studies Economy & Jobs Housing & Communities Transportation
Alberta asked residents how the province should prioritize building schools, hospitals, roads, and other public infrastructure. Over 3,200 Albertans shared their views in summer 2020. The feedback shaped a new law and a 20-year plan for capital spending.

Why This Matters

Schools, hospitals, roads, bridges—these shape daily life in Alberta. Where new infrastructure gets built affects commute times, healthcare access, and which communities grow. This consultation gave Albertans a say in those long-term priorities.

What Could Change

The Infrastructure Accountability Act became law in December 2021. It requires government to publish a 20-year capital plan and update it regularly. This creates more transparency about which projects get funded and when.

Key Issues

  • How should government prioritize different types of infrastructure?
  • What infrastructure does Alberta need to support economic recovery?
  • How can capital planning be more transparent and accountable?

How to Participate

  1. This consultation is now closed. Review the What We Heard report to see how public input shaped the outcomes.
  2. Read the 20-Year Strategic Capital Plan that resulted from this engagement.

What Happened

More than 3,200 submissions were received through an online survey and email between June 22 and August 10, 2020. The input informed the development of the Infrastructure Accountability Act (Bill 73), which came into force December 8, 2021, and the 20-Year Strategic Capital Plan, released December 16, 2021.
