Rebuilding the Ominnik Marsh Trail Boardwalk at Riding Mountain National Park

Official title: Ominnik Marsh Trail Anchor System & Boardwalk Replacement

Closed Environmental Assessment Environment & Climate Transportation
A 2024 windstorm destroyed nearly 500 metres of floating boardwalk on one of Riding Mountain National Park's most popular trails. Parks Canada plans to rebuild with a new anchoring system and accessible boardwalk that blends into the marsh ecosystem. The project includes new rest areas with benches.

Why This Matters

Ever hiked the Ominnik Marsh Trail near Wasagaming? It's been closed since the storm damage. This rebuild will restore access to one of the park's signature experiences. The new design promises better accessibility and durability.

What Could Change

About 400 metres of new floating boardwalk will replace the damaged sections. A new anchoring system will prevent future storm damage. Three rest areas with benches will be added along the trail.

Key Issues

  • What anchoring system will best protect the boardwalk from future storms while minimizing environmental impact?
  • How can the new boardwalk design improve accessibility for all visitors?
  • How should the boardwalk blend into the marsh ecosystem?
