Underwater Fibre Optic Cable Installation in Seven Ontario Lakes

Official title: New Fibre Installation

Closed Regulations & Permits Environment & Climate Technology & Digital
Bell Canada wants to lay fibre optic cables underwater in seven lakes near Kingston, Ontario. The cables would bring high-speed internet to lakeside homes in Knowlton Lake, Draper Lake, South Bay, Buck Lake, Battersea Lake, Little Cranberry Lake, and Lost Bay. About 6 km of cable total would be installed across all locations.

Why This Matters

Live on one of these lakes? This project could finally bring reliable high-speed internet to your home. Cottage owners and year-round residents in these areas often struggle with poor connectivity.

What Could Change

If approved, Bell could install underwater cables in all seven water bodies. Construction would involve laying cable along lake bottoms, which may temporarily disturb sediment. Residents would gain access to fibre internet service.

Key Issues

  • Should Bell be permitted to install underwater fibre optic cables in these lakes?
  • What environmental impacts might the cable installation have on the lakes?
