Port of Oshawa Road Widening - Farewell Street and Harbour Road

Official title: Farewell Street and Harbour Road Reconstruction and Extension

Closed Environmental Assessment Housing & Communities Transportation
The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority wants to widen and extend roads leading to the Port of Oshawa's East Wharf. Farewell Street would double from 2 to 4 lanes for 200 metres, with extensions to both Farewell Street and Harbour Road. An existing multi-use trail will be relocated to make room for the Harbour Road extension.

Why This Matters

Live near the Port of Oshawa? This project means more truck traffic on wider roads. The multi-use trail you might walk or bike on will be moved somewhere else. Construction will also bring new streetlights, fencing, and security cameras to the area.

What Could Change

If approved, Farewell Street becomes a 4-lane road near the port entrance. Harbour Road extends 410 metres east, replacing an existing trail. New stormwater infrastructure, security cameras, and fencing get installed along the corridor. Transport Canada is partially funding this through the National Trade Corridors Fund.

Key Issues

  • Should the road widening and extension proceed as proposed?
  • What are the environmental impacts of replacing the multi-use trail?
