Help Redesign Vancouver's Chinatown Memorial Square

Official title: Chinatown Memorial Square Redesign |\n唐人街紀念廣場重新設計

Closed Community Planning Housing & Communities
Vancouver is redesigning Chinatown Memorial Square, a public space at Keefer and Columbia Streets that hosts cultural events and honours Chinese-Canadian history. Three design concepts have been developed based on community feedback. Phase 3 engagement has concluded, and a refined design will be shared in fall 2025.

Why This Matters

Live in or visit Vancouver's Chinatown? This square is where the community gathers for cultural celebrations and remembers Chinese-Canadian history. The redesign will shape how this space looks and functions for years to come. Even if you don't live nearby, this project reflects how cities honour immigrant communities.

What Could Change

The square could get new seating, shade trees, improved lighting, and better accessibility. The design will aim to make the space more flexible for events while highlighting Chinatown's cultural heritage and history of resilience. A long-term maintenance plan will also be developed.

Key Issues

  • Which of the three design concepts best celebrates Chinatown's culture and traditions?
  • How should the square balance flexibility for events with permanent features like seating and trees?
  • Should the size of the square be increased?

How to Participate

  1. Review the three design concepts to understand the proposed options for the square.
  2. Read the Phase 3 Engagement Summary to see what feedback was received.
  3. Email the project team at memorialsquareredesign@vancouver.ca with questions or additional feedback.

What Happened

Phase 3 engagement has concluded. The city presented three design concepts developed by PFS Studio, informed by feedback from Phases 1 and 2, workshops with the Community Advisory Group, civic committees, and local organizations. An engagement summary has been published. The refined preferred design concept will be shared with the community in fall 2025.
